We were represented this year at the last minute Southwell Tri by Matt and Sara Rodgers. The 400 meter swim, 19k bike and 5k run was completed in 1:08:47 by Matt and 1:20:16 by Sara. Having spent himself on the bike, Matt cruised the run phase with our club riders cheering him to a respectable time.

Mat Barker-Quick's 5th place finish in the last NMRRL race at Stainton secured him the M2 category prize. With the format of the races changing next season it will be interesting to see how HDCC riders get on, hopefully continued success. Commenting on this Mr Barker-Quick said 'I hope my victory demonstrates that hard work, dedication and planning are not required to be successful....you just need a good head start on the decent riders'
Mat's second 5th in a row
Chairman Mat managed 5th place in the penultimate Thursday league race at Stainton. To add to the competition a passing tractor decided to block the course on the 6th lap, splitting the field. Still, rather that than crashing.......

Greg Elliott has stormed recent 25 mile TT races with times consistently under the hour. His best time of 58:25 is a club record since the reformation of HDCC. Not satisfied with this landmark, Greg still thinks he can go quicker, looking for a sub 57 this season.
Greg in training....or is it?
Ladies Captain Brenda Watson completed a 12 hour cycle ride on covering 172.269 miles (avs 14.4 mph). This is the first time in years that a HDCC club member has attempted a 12 hour ride. Can you do better?

Please see below for current stock list. We are unlikely to get any further kit from Bergamo this year so when it's gone......E-mail contact@hdcc.co.uk for all enquiries.
Despite treacherous rainy conditions Matt Rodgers sprinted to 7th (unofficially) in the first NMRRL race at Stainton. Clearly the combination of commuting to work on his bike and carbon wheels has borne fruit. HDCC race team have performed well this year in the NMRRL with riders contesting the points on a regular basis.

In 2009 we recognise the landmark achievement by club member George Morris for 50 years of membership with HDCC. Not only has George been an active and competitive cyclist during this time, he is also still involved in the management of the club and other events within the CTT. We recently recognised this achievement by presenting George with a commemorative gold watch at a recent club meeting.

This sportive attended by HDCC started dry but soon got very wet and cold on a surprisingly hilly route. The route was different from previous years and would have been much better in dry weather! Colin Simpson, Pete Lees and Mick Wainwright completed the course in 5hrs46 averaging 17.2mph, Brenda in 6hrs 40 & Neil Watson in 6hrs10.

Hope you all enjoyed the ride to Lincoln Grand Prix on Sunday, joining up with Retford Wheelers. Congratulations to local rider Russell Downing for the victory. This Saturday's club 25 mile Time Trial Championships saw Greg retain his title with a time of 1:02:59, an improvement of nearly 4 minutes on last years winning time. Despite being the only full HDCC member to enter, it was unlikely any other HDCC rider would have posed much of a threat....
The first Torworth NMRRL race kicked off with a good result for Harworth Race Team. Mat & Leigh set off in the middle group and with the storming pace, maintained the gap from the scratch group. Leigh mis-timed his sprint slightly finishing 11th, with Chairman Mat sneaking past for a 6th place finish.
This Sunday saw possibly the best HDCC team effort in recent times, with six quaility riders competing in the Ray Levers Memorial Road Race. The 7 lap race through Torworth was seeded into 3 groups, with all HDCC riders setting off in the middle group. Conditions on the course were tough but strong riding meant all finished in the heart of the field. John unfortunatley punctured ending his race, although we are sure he will return to the race scene this year.

Greg Elliott produced a creditable 33rd place result (out of 100) on Saturdays VTTA Blyth 18Km TT, clocking 27:07. He improved on his prior year result despite strong winds through Torworth. This is after an impressive 01:02:21 in the Sheffrec CC 2up 25 on 07/03/09, partnered by Dave Clarke.
Last Sunday saw a great turnout from Harworth club riders on the annual Tom Simpson Ride. Over 100 riders set off from the pavilion on either the improved 60 mile or 38 mile route. The elite riders set a storming pace, with Jon, Greg, Dick and Mat taking up the chase in the second group. Jon & Mat suffered for their early efforts with Greg coming home as officially the first HDCC rider (showing that the structured winter coaching is paying off). Other riders completing the 60 mile course were Matt, Andy, Andy, Leigh, Mark & Nigel. The new '10am' riders also perfomed well on the 38 mile course: Brenda, Rachael & Neil. Thanks to Dave Marsh for the organisation, course and catering at the end.

Ever wondered what gear ratios you need? Standard 53:39 or Compact 50:34 or Triple?. The spreadsheet below tells you exactly what gear ratio and speed each combination gives you. For example, running a 53 front and 11 rear at a cadence of 90rpm will see you travelling at 34.0 mph!! (based on a standard 700c wheel with 23mm tyre). Just another useful tool from HDCC!

The Harworth club annual ride to Skegness was successfully completed by 11 riders on Saturday. Setting off at 6:30am and despite 4 punctures, the team took approx 4 hours to complete the 70+ miles. Following winds made the ride favourable, as did the reward of bacon sandwiches in Market Rasen and liquid refreshments at the end. Notable achievement of the ride goes to young Jack who, as a tribute to Tom Simpson, rode on a circa 1960's bike. This didn't stop him passing his father Keith on all the hills. Thanks to Andy for the organisation and thanks also to the support teams. Click on the images for the full sized photos...
