19th Feb: The sun was shining and therefore record attendance achieved – 18 riders out. Andy suggested a ride to Sudbrook (Lincoln area), we last rode this on 4th April 2010. We all set off and took the main road (A631) into Gainsborough, then it was narrow lanes and small villages all the way to the cafe. Cafe was pretty good and as we sat outside Andy’s tyre blew so we had an extended stop while Andy repaired his bike. In total we had done 42 miles before we reached the cafe (picture below) so a couple of riders who had not been out for a while were slowing on the return. Pete decided to stay with Colin and help him home. Otherwise it was a excellent ride in lovely sunshine with a great attendance – 74 miles at an average speed of 17mph. Please note the next weeks ride will be the Tom Simpson Memorial Ride (Sunday, Feb 26th) from the sports pavillion at the recreation ground on Scrooby Road, Harworth and Bircotes (our usual meeting point). Riders will start getting three at 9am and groups will set off in waves from 9.30am onwards.
12th Feb: Windy , cold and very wet meant that only four riders were daft enough to turn out. We decided to keep close to Retford in case it got worse, so we rode out to Rampton hospital which seemed the ideal destination. Although we were getting very wet we all enjoyed the ride, we decided against a cafe stop and rode 45 miles before going home. Refreshing ride in poor weather. Hopefully Spring is soon..
5th Feb: At last the weather was suitable for cycling, Dave stated he had never been to Newmillerdam so we decided to make this the ride for today. Two riders stated they were not at fullfitness after illness (Pete & Mel) so they hinted that they may not do the whole ride. We set off at a steady pace and all rode together, as we approached Spotborough we were extra careful since we have had to riders who have had accidents on this hill. All was ok and we cycled on towards the cafe at a pace suitable for all riders and the terrain, this is one of the hillest rides on the HDCC list. Excellent cafe stop, picture below outside the cafe before we set off on the route back.
A excellent ride back with the sun shinning all the way only one breakdown – Phil’s chain. Well done to all riders especially Mel & Pete who managed to complete the whole ride. Rider of the week was given to Lee. Ride was approx 76 mile at an average of 15.6 mph.
29th January: Another icy day and therefore only seven riders attended. Due to the risk of icy conditions we all decided to stay on the main roads , after we had joked with Dave Evans telling him we were doing the power station run again (route he felloff in ice). We all set off together towards Retford pointing out any ice conditions, we then took the right and road past Randby prison towards Manton. We road through the middle of Worksop and decided to stop at the cafe in Oldcoates, excellent stop and we chatted about the 2017 Yorkshire Dales trip. We confirmed that we will raise with Andy & Steve the possible trip date of 1st September. We then got on our bikes again and headed for Tickhill to drop off Dave & Alan, we then turned towards Harworth for home. When we got back to the pavillion the sun was now shining and we decided to put an extra loop in and rode the time trial circuit. Overall a safe ride keeping to the main roads.
22nd January: A really cold day meant that only seven riders were in attendance for the Sunday club ride. We decided to initially stay to the main rodes and hope that the sun shone through later, so we selected the Whisby nature reserve route since it is mainly main roads until Dunham bridge. Although it was very cold the roads were not bad and we soon were at the cafe, we decided to sit inside and get a warm. When we came outside again and it was even colder, this made us ride faster on the way home to keep warm. Excellent ride with the rider of the week being Alan.
15th January: Only five riders turned up for the ride this week due to the predicted heavy rain. As we decided on the route we had a slight drizzle, Andy asked where the hard Harworth man, who went to the Himalyas was, John had already called round and he was sat in an armchair in front of the fire stating it was too wet. We all called passed his house and he still chickened out. We finally set off towards Edwinstowe, going a different route through Rufford, we arrived at the craft centre cafe with hardly any rain fall. We all enjoyed a excellent break before getting back in the saddle and riding through clumber park, Worksop and back to Harworth. All rode well on the excellent ride with little rain afterall. Please note I have modified my bike so Pete Lees can come out with us next week, see picture below.
8th January: Thirteen riders attended the first ride for 2017, obviously some riders are still injured from the Xmas ride and we wish them a speedy recovery. Andy listed a few rides that we had not done for several months and from the list we selected Messingham ride. We all rode together and we decided to chain gang along the striaght road to Belton, we all rode together and we arrived at the cafe achieving an average of approx 18mph. This is always a nice stop and obviously Lee and Ali have missed each other since they reserved a table and spoilt each other with cream cakes (see picture below).
We set off back through the wood route to Gainsborough, all riders rode well and safely returned back (65 miles completed at an average of 17.5mph) . Excellent ride.
