HDCC is very proud to be the first club of Britains greatest ever cyclist Tom Simpson, Tom lived in Harworth and he joined the club as a young lad and he rode every Sunday. Tom's cycling career went on to become simply breathtaking. In 1960, his first season as a pro, he came within one stage place of winning the yellow jersey in his first Tour de France. In the 1962 Tour he wore the maillot jaune(yellow jersey) and finished 6th overall. He won the Paris-Nice in 1967. Tom excelled in the One-day Classics, where he won the Tour of Flanders in 1961, Bordaux-Paris in 1963, Milan-San Remo in 1964 and the Tour of Lombardy in 1965. Tom won the World Champion of the Road title in 1965, which is considered to be his greatest achievement. He also won the BBC Sports Personailty Of The Year in 1965. There is a museum dedicated to Tom Simpson at the Harworth Sports and Social Club, where HDCC meet for Club runs and meetings. On display there are his World Champion colours bike and jersey, TDF yellow jersey, other various items of clothing and some of the trophys he won. At the front of the Sports and Social Club there is a smaller version of the Simpson Memorial, which is found on Mont Ventoux where Tom sadly died whilst competing in the Tour de France.
